Karam Kriya is the spiritual science of applied numerology. Numbers are the most essential level of existence. They are the universal language. All of nature, all of creation unfolds according to natural sequences. Numbers are the blueprint, the underlying matrix. When we study numbers in this way, we are studying life. When we study life in this way, we are studying numbers. One illuminates the other, personally impersonally.

To bring awareness to this underlying magic that makes us is to come closer to one’s own essence. To consciously align with the harmony of numbers is to live in unison and conscious cooperation with our own true nature and with the cosmos. It is also to come into closer harmony with our fellow human beings, all manifestations of the one primal intelligence and united by this same essence.

Karam Kriya is commonly taught in the tradition of Kundalini Yoga and we use the same references ie. the 10 spiritual bodies, the Mul Mantra and the lives of the 10 Sikh Gurus. We apply the principles the numbers reveal to the teachings of Kundalini Yoga and likewise the teachings of Kundalini Yoga can tell us alot about the numbers themselves.

There is nowhere that numbers are not, so a study of numbers illuminates any and all subjects we may choose to look at. While Karam Kriya is close to Kundalini Yoga it is not exclusive or limited to that. It is a universal study.

An application of Karam Kriya that is easily accessible and close to home is our date of birth. Encoded in the date on which we were born is very essential information about us. The numbers in the specific positions of day, month and year interact with the quadrants in which they appear. Each quadrant is its own domain, ruled by a pair of numbers, all of which add up to 10. These are 1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6 and in the centre and periphery 5/10.

These 5 dimensions correspond to the 5 elements, 5 senses, 5 key relationships, 5 aspects of time, 5 axes and so on and on and on. The pairs of numbers give a personal/concrete and universal/abstract aspect, so 5 pairs gives 10, with 10 being the total that is more than the sum of its parts. There are 10 planets, 10 organs, 10 spiritual bodies, 10 fingers and toes and so on.

All of the universe as an expression of number can be found on this multi-dimensional map. You have your own personal map and that is given by the numbers of your date of birth. The numbers you have in each of the 5 dimensions influence how you experience the themes associated with all the topics connected to each of the dimensions.

This is not prescriptive and it’s not fortune-telling. You are an active participant in your life and how you live your numbers is an ongoing negotiation. No number is in itself good or bad, yet each number has a range of possible expressions from problematic to highly supportive, from virus to virtue and from karmic (automatic pattern repetition) to dharmic (consciously chosen, soul-nourishing). In our personal evolution, we are all moving along this continuum, (hopefully) evolving with the use of our applied intelligence to transform karma to dharma over the course of our life.

In this way, numbers give us an xray view into the issues of our lives and allow us to decode the surface level to make change at a level where it will truly be change. Numbers do not exist in isolation, but in relation to each other. This study reveals that there are 8 natural sequences that all processes move through to come to completion. Karam Kriya is a diagnostic tool, allowing us to recognise where in these sequences we are skipping steps, losing consciousness or following the same path every time to end up with the same unwanted result. In this work we slow the automatic habitual processes down in order to open a space of consciousness where it is not. It is an approach that centres closely on the word. We are what we speak and think. Words shape consciousness. And so changing our language changes consciousness. Becoming aware of and changing the phrases that we repeat that lock us into our old stories and giving our breath to new consciously chosen language we can birth ourselves anew.

The study of numbers as divine intelligences

Studying yourself (and others) with the guidance of the wisdom of numbers is a great application, but it is not the only one. All courses taught at Grisht Ashram are in one way or another informed by number awareness. In the choice of themes according to the date or month, the way the courses are structured based on number sequences, how topics are taught, the understandings that are conveyed.. all is informed by numbers. Sometimes this will be more explicit and sometimes more inherent. Either way, the sense of coherence that comes from the numbers is something that can be perceived and felt. It allows us to express complex things in simple ways and to touch all aspects of a topic, so that the effect is a sense of wholeness and integrity. That is the magic of numbers.

If you feel inspired by this, attend workshops and trainings with us. You can also read more about it on the Karam Kriya international website HERE. There is a profound approx 3 year online Karam Kriya training with Shiv Charan Singh, founder and director of the Karam Kriya School, that you can take module by module. we recommend reaching out to talk with us about this, if it is calling you.

Jai Ram Kaur’s connection with karam kriya

Jai Ram began studying Karam Kriya in 2001. It was through this study that she was introduced to Kundalini Yoga. On meeting Shiv Charan Singh for the first time and having a consultation with him, she realised that she had found what she had been looking for her whole life. She had long sensed the existence of an underlying universal language, coded in mythology and symbol and common to all, crossing all boundaries of time, space and culture and she had longed to meet it it, to know it, to speak it. She began the 3 year training in Germany in 2001, one of the first trainings, completing in 2005 and diving deep into the study for herself, while also having 3 children in this time - an extraordinarily fertile and learning-intense phase of life! Since then, she has remained an avid student of the numbers, integrating the insights their study brings into her life and work, giving one on one consultations, workshops and courses. Covid, throwing us into the world of online connection, opened the way to a deepening of the study. Jai Ram has been in attendance at the international training sessions almost continuously since 2020, becoming a mentee and also teaching on the Karam Kriya for Kundalini Yoga and the full Karam Kriya training programme for China. She is part of a team that works on refining the online learning platform for the training led by Shiv Charan Singh and is a co-founder and leader of a Karam Kriya women’s online working group.
